Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia’s largest electricity provider, has documented a staggering 300% increase in electricity theft linked to illegal cryptocurrency mining operations between 2018 and 2024. Cases surged from 610 to 2,397, with miners bypassing meters to siphon power—costing TNB millions and destabilizing the grid.

The utility firm is escalating enforcement, collaborating with police, energy regulators, and anti-corruption agencies to dismantle illicit mining networks. Public vigilance has risen sharply, with 1,699 complaints logged from 2020 to 2024—averaging 340 reports monthly.
